COLLEGE STUDENTS
Every year hundreds of Tibetan students enroll into various colleges across India. Though most of them get some amount of scholarship from various organizations like Sherig (Education department of Tibetan government in-exile), Tibetan Children’s Village and Tibetan Homes Foundation. Since these projects have to reach thousands of students every year, it is hard to provide subjective aid based on the need of each student. Those who do not have any personal financial sources other than the scholarship face problems.
The areas of help can be:
1. College fee – total or partial.
2. Tuition fees for Professional courses like Engineering, MBBS, Dental, Nursing, Chartered accountant and etc.
3. Monthly allowances to meet a student’s daily needs like stationery, transit fare and other daily expenses ……
4. Monthly rent, full or partial, as the rent is
insanely high in metropolitan areas.
MONKS
Here in my locality Sera, South India, we have around six thousand monks. Most of them are either from Tibet, Nepal, or Kashmir. Many of them don’t have any financial support. They face problem during serious illinesses and old age.
The areas of help can be
1. Monthly allowances – to meet their daily needs.
2. Medical emergencies – financial aid for medical and other emergencies.
3. Travel allowances – Some monks are unable to attend ver important religious teachings due to lack of finances.
4. Geshe Ceremony – Geshe(doctrate in Buddhist Philosophy) Degree is the ultimate dream of every monk. There is a tradition of making offerings to all the monks in the monastery (around 6,000 monks in Sera) during the Geshe ceremony. Many monks can not afford the offerings due to lack of funds.
OTHERS:
There is also a dire need of donors to help the aged and the sick, There are lots of seniors and others who dont have medical insurance coverages and have to spent their life savings on surgeries and hospital bills. I feel that these acts of kindness would accumulate more merits than merely performing the religious rituals.
